Curlews: 31st January 2022

Monday 31st January 2022

Good morning and welcome to home learning. I will miss having the children in school and hope that we can replicate the 'in-class' learning in the best way that we can.  You will find lesson slides and activities below. If you do not have access to a printer,  please do not worry and simply record on paper. Do message me at any point if you need further clarification.

English - Talk for Writing

Today is the start of our new Talk for Writing unit which is based on warning tales. Last week, the children completed a 'cold task' to show me what they know about writing stories with a warning. Below, you will find a set of slides for the whole week. You will find any supporting materials, such as worksheets listed under the correct day.

Maths

Monday - Thursday's Maths lessons begin with a 'Mastering Number' session. The slides for these four sessions can be found below, with each new day dated within the document. On Friday, the children can recap on the skills covered from Monday - Friday.

In terms of the main part of the lesson, this week's focus is upon revising the skills learned during our Multiplication and Division unit. Today, I would like the children to practise solving divided by 10, 2 and 5 questions. Make use of home equipment such as dried pasta to help answer the calculations. For example, when solving 30 divide by 5, ask your child to count out 30 pieces of pasta and divide these between 5 plates. Then ask how many pieces of pasta are on one plate and there is the answer!
History

Over the past 4 weeks, we have focused on the Geography elements of our Mabe Matters topic, however, today, we will delve into some village history! The lesson is explained through my slides below and I've also added pictures for the children to contrast. NB: You only need one of each picture.

Maths

Please see the Mastering Number slide presentation from Monday. I would then like the children to complete the end of unit Multiplication assessment which you can find below. Please encourage your child to complete the test on their own, so that I have a true sense of their current attainment. Following this, please can they spend time on Times Tables Rock Stars.
Design and Technology

We are focusing on vehicles this half term. Please could the children recap on the first set of slides below and then look at the second set. They might like to make some vehicles of their own using Lego or other construction materials.

'Twosday' is officially on 22.2.22, but as we are on half term on this date, I thought we could celebrate the 'Twos' today (even though it's Wednesday!). Please see the slides below (which incorporates today's Mastering Number to save you accessing two separate sets of slides). Instead of using the paint palettes and beads, you might like to use 2 cups/plates and pasta/grapes etc.
Science

This week we continue our Animals, including Humans theme with an investigation into caring for pets. Please see the slides below for detail. Next week, the children will use this research to create posters.

Useful websites include:

You will find the research recording grid below.
PE

In school, we have Yoga on a Wednesday afternoon and Gym on a Friday morning. You might like to try some of the home activities on this site to keep the children moving:

PSHE and Computing

In PSHE we are thinking about what makes a good team. We will discuss how to work well in a team and the children have been set the challenge of working in pairs to make a fish for our pool of hopes and dreams. We will think about how to overcome obstacles e.g. if you want different colours/designs and how to encourage your teammate. We will also discuss real life examples of teamwork e.g. sports teams, hospital teams and animals working together.

In computing we are using Just 2 Easy data to create pictograms of our favourite fruits. Here is the link. You could also make a pictogram by hand for the members of your family and we could compare them next week.

Have fun!

Today is Number Day!  You will find the assembly below, as well as a presentation all about Paul Klee, who is the Maths-related artist we are focusing on in Curlews. There are ideas for artwork in the 'Maths on Toast'  document below. I have also added simple shapes that the children might like to use to complete their Paul Klee inspired artwork.
