Spring Term 2021
Dear Parents and Carers
Happy New Year!
Welcome back, I do hope that you have had a restfull and enjoyable break with loved ones.
I do hope that you are able to navigate this wonderful new website . Please note that all new lessons are listed at the bottom of this page.
The Autumn term was brilliant - with everyone adjusting to a different way of doing things in school and what a finale with their performance in the Nativity.
Please continue to read regularly with your child and record it in their Reading Record.
Along with the activities in the grid, please watch the daily Read Write Inc phonics video lessons on the Ruth Miskin YouTube channel. I have included a schedule of these for your information, your child wil need to watch the Speed Sounds, Word Time and Spelling film every day.
For reading books, please login to Oxford Owl at Home, using the following class login details:
On this page you can select Read Write Inc from the reading scheme menu, and a shelf of ebooks will appear. During the previous lockdown, the selection of books available was extended to support home reading, so hopefully this will be the case this time, too. For now, please contact me via Dojo for advice on which book to select to match your child's current levels.
It is great that some of the children are accessing Mathletics and Numbots, please continue to do so. If you have lost log in details please contact me.
You will find our Topic and Science knowledge organisers below this message. Please encourage your child to use these for reference during each Topic and Science lesson in the same way as we will be doing in school.
Please upload at least one piece of work/photo to Class Dojo a day if possible. There is a link giving instructions for doing this below.
As always, please don't hesitate to get in touch via Dojo with any questions you may have or if you would like to share a photograph of your child's home learning.
At Mabe School we use the Read Write Inc scheme to teach reading and writing. Ruth Miskin, the author of the scheme has a daily lesson on You tube, the schedule is the file below. Please visit these speed sound lessons and the Oxford Owl site for more practise. Reading is the key to all areas of learning. On the Exofrd Owl site you can access books that are at the level that the children have been assessed at. There is more information and guidance about teaching reading, should you wish to have a look, at https://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/find-out-more/parents/ . If you unsure of the level your child is reading at, please send a message on Class Dojo and I will respond indivdiually.
Regular exercise is a really important to both our physical and mental health. Once again Joe Wicks will be making an appearance on You Tube on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Make exercise fun - playing football in the garden, walking, cycling, scooting and skateboarding. Please stay safe and be careful - we don't want any injuries!

We start the term with a piece of independent writing in the childrens' special book. I ask that you write about things that have happened during the school holiday. No adult help should be given but if necessary a word mat may be used.
Topic - Geography - Let's Go On Safari
Before we start our topic, have a go a this quiz to see how much you know already.

This term we will be starting a new unit of Talk for Writing, today we will be doing a "Cold Task" - writing a journey story. This is an unaided piece again with only a word mat to support spelling of high frequency words. The journey can be anything from a trip on foot, car, train or plane.

English - Talk for Writing
For today and tomorrow - please take a look at the powerpoint below to begin our journey to learning about Handa's Surprise.
Some parents are not aware of the way we teach Guided Reading in Sandpiper's and have asked for a little guidance about the "Reading Dogs". Have a look at the Powerpoint show below so that you can become familiar with some of the things that we will be looking at during this lockdown.
The following presentation is a lovely start to the unit, do not worry about downloading a worksheet, you should be able to do your observations and pictures in a book/on a piece of paper. If you can get a parent to upload onto the Class Dojo portfolio for me to see what you have been up to.
Today we can take a first look at our book Mama Panya's Pancakes and we are going to use Predicting Pip to help us predict what is going to happen in the story.
This week I would like you to practise writing the letters from the Zig Zag Monster family. Remember to hold your pencil propery (with a frog leg grip - the pencil tip between your thumb and index finger and the other fingers tucked underneath). Sit in a comfortable chair, with your feet flat on the floor and try to sit up nice and straight.
Have a look at the following lessons on the Oak National Academy website. We will begin looking at our first unit on Pulse.
PSHE - The Oak National Academy has a special unit to support children through lockdown.
